Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Children can start from age 4 in our Little Ninjas program, designed specifically for 4–7 year-olds. It uses games and activities to build focus, coordination and confidence, and kids progress into our junior and main classes as they grow.
No. Most people walk in with no experience. Every program is built to take complete beginners, and your first two classes are free so you can try before you commit. You’ll be shown the fundamentals from your very first session.
You’re never too old. Toogee has students of every age, including adults returning after decades away and members over 50 in our Seniors program. Classes scale to your fitness and ability, so you progress at your own pace.
Just wear comfortable clothes you can move in – track pants and a t-shirt are ideal, and no shoes. Once you join, you’ll be fitted for a dobok, the traditional Taekwondo uniform.
Toogee teaches traditional Korean Taekwondo based on the original Chang-Hon system, including the Chon-Ji patterns. We also cover the Kukkiwon (Olympic) style and blend in elements of Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and Kali for a well-rounded, practical self-defence program.
Both are striking martial arts, but Taekwondo is Korean and known for dynamic kicking — fast, high and spinning kicks — while karate is Japanese/Okinawan and relies more on hand strikes and linear movement. Taekwondo also has its own patterns (hyung/poomsae) and an Olympic sport discipline.
Yes, Taekwondo is one of the most effective activities for building children’s confidence, focus and self-discipline, alongside fitness and coordination. The belt system gives kids clear goals and real achievement, and many parents notice better concentration and behaviour at home and school.
Yes. Beyond Taekwondo’s kicks and strikes, our curriculum blends in Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and Kali so students can defend themselves at any range — and, just as importantly, learn the awareness to avoid trouble in the first place.
Students progress through a series of belt ranks – white, yellow, green, blue, brown and black – earning the next rank at regular gradings, with stripes in between so progress stays steady and visible. Beyond black belt, the journey continues through the dan (degree) ranks.
With consistent training, most Toogee students reach black belt in around 3 years. Taekwondo is a lifelong pursuit, though – black belt is really where the deeper learning begins.
